Harlequin Romances Changed My Life

My mother introduced me to romances when I was a teenager. We were on holiday at the beach. It was summer, and as often happens during our summers, it was raining. I’ve always been a bit of a bookworm, and I’d finished reading my pile of books. I was complaining and whiny and my mother was at her wit’s end.

She gave me a pile of Harlequin romances and left me to my reading. I loved them. I like the journey to love and happy ever after, and most of all I enjoyed the settings. Most of the romances were set in various parts of Britain, some in London and others were set in France, Italy and Spain. Oh, and Greece. I really liked the stories about Greek millionaires who owned their own islands.

The more I read about these far-flung places, the more I felt a yearning to visit them in person. Travel became something I really wanted to do.

I married fairly young—at twenty-one—and I suggested to my husband that we go overseas for a year-long working holiday. It took a bit of persuading, but finally, he agreed. We packed our suitcases and headed for London.

In London, we worked in pubs, living in to save money. We’d work for several months then head off to explore. Our one year turned into six because we were having too much fun to go home. We toured Britain and Europe, walked along Greek beaches, drank wine in Italy, ate croissants in France and cheese in Holland. Then, we traveled farther afield, exploring Africa, Turkey, Pakistan, India and Nepal.

At the end of six years we resettled back in New Zealand, but we still manage to fit in quite a bit of travel. We’ve visited the US, Australia, various parts of Asia and lots of different Pacific Islands. We’ve also traveled extensively through our home country, which is very pretty. Some people refer to New Zealand as Gods’ own!

Reading those first Harlequin romances really spurred my adventurous side and changed my life. Along with learning about new cultures and experiencing some of the things I’d read about, I’ve accumulated knowledge that finds its way into some of my books. I’ve set books in New Zealand, Australia, different Pacific Islands, Britain, India and the United States.

Romances and Harlequin romances in particular really have had a huge impact on my thinking. I’m happy, adventurous and love life. A win-win situation!
