It all starts when Sarah finds a ring on the grounds of Chatham Manor after a night of ghost-hunting. She takes home much more than a souvenir.

Ellie opened the driver’s side door, and Sarah waited for her to crawl across the seat of the old Mustang and pop the passenger-side lock. The broken power locks were one of many deficiencies in the classic car. Sarah retrieved her betraying phone from her pocket and powered it up as Ellie shuffled about inside the car.

As she checked her phone display, a glint of light on the ground to her right caught her eye. Aiming her screen at the ground like a flashlight, she bent low and searched for the source of the flash. Just as she began investigating, though, she heard the lock pop, and Ellie pushed the door open. The door hit Sarah in the head, knocking her to the cold, hard ground.

“Sorry,” Ellie said, scrambling to catch the door before it slammed closed again.

Sarah mumbled a few choice obscenities and rubbed her head. She reached down and ran her finger over something half-buried in the ground.

“What is that?” Ellie was hanging out the car, her body stretched across the seats.

“I don’t know.” Sarah turned the flashlight of her phone up to full beam and picked at the object in the frozen turf. “Do you have a pen or something?”

Ellie scuffled around inside the dark, rolling landfill that was her car—the interior lights long burned out—and produced a screwdriver instead. “Will this work?”

Sarah took the offered screwdriver and dug at the buried treasure. After breaking it free from its cold grave, she examined it by the light of her cell phone. “It’s a ring.”

“Let me see.”

Ellie scrambled back into the driver’s seat. Sarah joined her in the car, then shut the door against the cold.

“Hold the light,” Sarah said, digging a Kleenex from her coat pocket to clear as much of the mud from the ring as possible.

The ring remained caked with mud, which filled the engraved edges, but the stone cleaned off easily enough. The set, a square cut black onyx, glinted. The cold metal of the band warmed in her hand.

“You know what that is, right?” Ellie asked.

“A ring?” Sarah couldn’t keep the sarcasm from her voice, not after the night she’d had.

“An artifact.”

“No. Someone just lost a class ring. Like one of the sorority girls.”

“Does that look like a woman’s ring? No. No is the answer. That is a man’s ring. An officer’s ring or something. That could be a real-life, true-blue Civil War artifact.”

“I doubt it. And if it is, we’ll return it. This is a national park. There are rules.”

“I say finders keepers. Let me see it better.”

Snow nodded. “Now, this is
pretty basic, but we can get a lot more sophisticated.” He scratched out a
slightly more complex set of calculations, and Riley seemed absorbed.

“Man, this is so dope.”

“Glad you like it.”

“Wish Jenkins could make
physics so interesting.”

“You have to create the
excitement for yourself. See the potential.”

Riley looked up. “You make it
exciting.” He smiled slowly. “You make everything exciting.”

“M-me?” Snow’s brain froze.

“Yeah. Why do you think I
come see you play all the time? It’s like plugging into the solar system and
catching the stars in my hand.”

“S-stars are gas.”

“The planets, then. I’ve
wanted to tell you this for a while. I think you’re—”

The sound of a key in the
lock brought both their heads up.

Nooooooo.

Like some cosmic joke, the
apartment door opened and beautiful, perky, perfect Courtney Taylor walked in.
“Oh, hi. Are you two still studying? Oh my gosh, Snow, you must be magic or
something. No one could ever get him to study physics before. I told him, ‘You
have to do it, baby. The team can’t do without you. Find a way to learn this
shit.’ And what do you know? He found you. Amazing.” She walked over, pushed
Riley’s head back, kissed him on the lips, and plopped down in his lap. “Did
you learn a lot, baby?”

Her knee bumped Snow’s thigh,
and he leaped up like he’d been shot. “Oh gosh, look at the time. Better get
back to work myself. Have to study for the tournament and all.” Sweet God, he
had to get out of there.

Riley stood Courtney on her
feet and stepped over beside Snow. “When can you help me again? I’ve only got
two weeks. I made so much progress today. I know you’re busy, and I hate to
ask, but could you please—”

“Yes, of course. Just text
me, okay?” He ripped out the pages they’d been working on, shoved the notebooks
into his backpack, and headed for the door. He seemed to be running from
everyone these days. “Bye. Bye, uh, Courtney.”

Outside the door, he
clambered down the steep staircase and stopped at the bottom just to breathe.

What were you thinking, you idiot? That somehow his
girlfriend had magically transformed into a teapot?

He started to tell me something. He said he’s wanted
to tell me for a long time.

What are you dreaming? That he suddenly quit being
straight and is attracted to a wimpy little queen like you? Spare me.

Okay. Okay.

The door to Eudora’s
apartment flew open, and a hand emerged, holding a glass. “Hey, cutie. Have
some water.”

Like it was
perfectly normal to accept water while standing in hallways, he grasped the
glass and drank the liquid down. Amazing how much better he felt.

She took the empty
glass. “Lessons for the day. Don’t sell yourself short. And don’t believe
everything you see. Got it?”

“I… I guess so.”

“Good.” She patted
his cheek, and then the door closed behind her. If a caterpillar suddenly
appeared saying “Who are you?”, he wouldn’t be even slightly surprised.

“No, sir. I have dinner for two. Do you want me to serve it now?”
“What did you bring?”
“Sole amandine, mashed potatoes, and broccoli, sir. As you requested.”
“Do you like those foods, Sinders?”He looked up, startled, maybe, at hearing his nickname. “Sorry, I know that’s not your name. What is it?”
“Uh, Mark Sintorella, sir.”
“So do you like sole and mashed potatoes and broccoli, Mark?”
“Yes, sir. The chef does an excellent job.”
“Good, then you’ll eat it with me.”
Those dark eyes seemed to consume his face. “No, sir.”
“Yes, and you’ll call me Ash while you’re doing it.”
“Sir.” He looked down and then back up at Ash. “It’s my job to serve the food, not to eat it.”
“It’s your job to make the guests happy.”
His eyes returned to his shoes. “I can’t imagine why eating with me would make you happy.”
Ash stood and crossed the room. “Sin—uh, Mark, I don’t want to play rich guest games with you. If you don’t want to have dinner with me, you certainly don’t have to.”
“Did Miss Fanderel cancel?” He still hadn’t looked up.
“No, I ordered this dinner because I wanted to see you and I wanted to eat it with you.”
That got his attention. His head snapped up and the amber-brown eyes widened. “Really?”
“Yes. I thought since we have shared a, shall we say, personal moment, that we might get to know each other.” He pointed to the table. “Since you’re supposed to be serving my dinner, no one is going to break in and disturb us. We can relax and talk. That is, if you want to.”
“I shouldn’t.”
“Oh, why?”

The kid wiped the top of one shoe against his pant leg in back. “I might like it.”

SALE: Harms Way by Bobbi Cole Meyer

McKay McLemore is the best there is at her job—finding people who don’t want to be found. But when the super-sexy, Harley Davidson rider, Harm Pranston, pays top dollar for her to locate a woman and her teenaged son she becomes suspicious. What are his motives? Is he stalking the woman who is running scared? Yet despite her trepidation, and against her will, McKay aches to feel Harm’s tough-as-nails body against hers.

Harm has his reservations about hiring the sharp-tongued McLemore to locate a woman he hasn’t seen in 16 years. First off, the red-headed investigator treats him like a suspected criminal, and secondly he has to fight his urge to lose himself in her. Just recovering from a gut-wrenching break up, the last thing Harm needs is a dragon-tattooed Amazon who makes him want to drag her off to a cave somewhere…

The touch sent another surge of electricity through her. With a quick intake of breath, McKay inhaled Harm’s clean, musky scent and savored it for just a moment, her eyes sliding appreciatively to the red heart tattoo with the “yes” inside barely visible on his arm. She smiled because she knew it meant he was up for anything—and ready for it.

The first 10 purchasers of Harm’s Way from MyRomanceStory.com will each receive a $10 gift coupon for purchase of hot romance books from the MyRomanceStory e-bookstore site.

EXCERPT

Prince Gavin
Gavin’s gaze was drawn back to the castle’s battle-scarred walls and the heavily armed guards. The evil emanating from the structure surrounded and held him captive, like a lone deer surrounded by hungry wolves in the dead of winter, unable to move, its eyes glassy with fear, its limbs frozen by the hypnotic gleam of the wolves’ yellow eyes. Even knowing its life was ending, the deer wouldn’t break and run. So Gavin sat frozen in front of the castle.

The enormity of his quest enveloped Gavin and he sighed. Continuing on meant he might save the Wild Man, but he might put himself in danger as well. King Edward was his father’s enemy and possibly responsible for Aldred’s murder. If Gavin were caught, Edward wouldn’t treat him kindly. The young prince summoned his courage and focused on the Wild Man. It had seemed so simple last night in the company of Bryan and Philip.

********************

Philip
Looking at the stack of chopped wood, he smiled sadly. Two years ago he would never have dreamed he’d be here, chopping wood for food and a dry place to sleep. He shook his head at his thoughts, his shaggy, ill-cut black hair falling unevenly across his forehead. Two years. It seemed like forever.

Two years earlier, he had lived with his parents and baby brother on their small farm up north. His parents worked hard to put food on the table and to pay off the farm. Philip’s main job was to watch baby Benjamin while his mother helped his father in their small field. When Benjamin fell sick, Philip helped his father clear the old stalks and rocks from the soil while his mother nursed the baby. He helped his father carefully plant the winter wheat and barley for harvest in the spring.

As autumn slipped into winter, Benjamin hadn’t gotten better. His tiny body burned with fever. Those last few days when Philip held him, the heat coming from Benjamin threatened to slowly engulf him like the embers of a dying fire.

**********************

Bryan
In the five years he’d been James’s apprentice, Bryan had learned a lot. He made a sturdy sword, so James said. Two years still remained in his apprenticeship. Two long years.

Like most sons of tradesmen or farmers, his family had secured this apprenticeship early on. At eleven, he and his father had made the three-day journey south to the Pembroke Castle blacksmith. At first, the prospect of being away from home, on his own, and learning a respectable trade, was exciting. More importantly, it allowed him to see and talk with real knights.

He spent every day learning how to forge stronger swords, tougher armour, how to shoe horses, and even make pots and pans. It was a satisfying trade and one that would ensure him a livelihood. But Bryan didn’t want just a livelihood. Even now, only two years away from completing his apprenticeship, he still couldn’t see himself working with metal for the rest of his life. As long as he could remember, he had wanted only one thing: to be a knight like Sir Lancelot.
